Temporarily disable Gatekeeper

ICTS hosts an Apple Software Update Server, which helps ensure that your Apple computer is automatically kept up to date with all the latest Apple software and Mac OS X updates.

NOTE: The important thing is that you always install patches or updates when they are released.

Download the Apple Updater tool

  1. Using Safari, go to ICTS Downloads > Apple > OS Updates.
  2. Select Apple Updater and download the tool.

Configure your Mac to update

On campus (using the UCT Update Server)
NOTE: You may experience a warning stating that "Apple Updater" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. This occurs due to Apple’s Gatekeeper security feature. To continue, temporarily bypass the Gatekeeper, then repeat Step 1 again.
  1. Double-click the Apple Updater tool (located in the folder you downloaded it to).
  2. Click Open when the warning appears.
  3. When the Apple Updater tool opens, click UCT Apple Update Server.
  4. When asked to authenticate, enter your Mac OS X username and password (local user account) and click OK.
  5. Click OK to complete the configuration
Off campus (using the Apple Update Server)

If you're off campus, or have left UCT, you can revert your Apple Mac to its original settings which will mean your computer gets its updates directly from the Apple Update Server.

  3. Click Apple Updater, located in the Apple Dock or on the Desktop.
  4. When the Apple Updater tool opens, click UCT Apple Update Server.
  5. When asked to authenticate, enter your Mac OS X username and password (local user account) and click OK.
  6. Click OK to complete the configuration

Launch Software Update

From time to time, you can check and install available updates using the Software Update tool.

  1. Click the Apple icon and select About this MacSoftware Update.
  2. The App Store will open displaying the Updates tab.
    • Updates downloaded from the UCT update server will reflect the Source as appleupdate.uct.ac.za.
  3. Run the Software Update application by selecting UPDATE.
