Secure your computer

It is vital that you keep your computer secure - both physically (by keeping your machine securely locked away) and from virus and malware attacks. Attacks like this can destroy your hard work and can also quickly spread to people on your contacts list and infect their machines as well.

In order to prevent this from happening, you first need to install and use a reputable anti-virus program, such as Trellix, which you must keep updated. Trellix is available at no cost to you and can be obtained from our Downloads section. You also need to regularly accept all patches and updates to your software and operating system as soon as they are released by the vendors. Thirdly, you need to ensure your work is always backed up.

Installation instructions:

Installing and updating Trellix for Mac and Windows

UCT provides anti-virus software and virus-definition updates free of charge for all University-owned Windows computers and for all computers owned by UCT faculties, staff and students. If you're using a UCT-owned Windows machine, Endpoint Security will be installed by default.

However, if you need to install it manually on your computer, follow these instructions:

  1. Remove all other agents and virus scan packages from your machine.
  2. Log on to the Downloads section > click General > select your operating system.
  3. Select Antivirus > and select and download the installation packages for your applicable operating system:
    • Windows: TrellixAgent581_ENS10706.EXE and TrellixAgent581.exe.
    • Mac: Trellix Agent 5.8.1 and ENS 10.7.9_macOS10.15-macOS14.zip
  4. By default the package will be placed in the Downloads folder.
  5. Browse to the Downloads folder and run the installation.
Keep it updated

Trellix releases new virus definition files every day and it is your responsibility to ensure that your installation remains updated.

On campus:

If you are connected to the UCT network, Trellix will automatically update - as long as the Trellix Agent is running.

At home:

Open the Endpoint Security client and click Update Now.
