Blogging

Staff members and students can create their own blogs using a standard UCT template that allows for personalised banners and imagery. As per the UCT blog Terms of Use, the UCT blog site is not for personal blogging and blogs should be related to university activities. The platform used is WordPress, internationally recognised as one of the most user-friendly, powerful and popular blogging platforms. It provides an interface where content and media can be uploaded and published without having to know web coding or HTML.

How to set up a WordPress blog

Before you start blogging, familiarise yourself with the Terms of Use for blogging at UCT, as well as the UCT Web Content Management Policy.

Then, to set up your blog, all you need to do is:

  1. Log a call in the Service Portal under the Web and Collaboration tab. You will need to provide:
    • The URL you want (e.g. mysitename.uct.ac.za), also known as the DNS or Domain Name System.
    • The name of the person responsible for the site (site owner).
    • The purpose of the blog.
  2. ICTS will create a domain name and your blog page, based on details you have provided.
  3. You will then receive the login details for your WordPress website from ICTS.
  4. Use your UCT credentials (staff / student number and password) to log into your blog and get writing.
