How do I access the internet?

Your access to the internet depends on which device you are using and whether you use it in a UCT residence or not.

Consult the table below to find out how you should set up your internet connection.

Device type Instructions

PCs and other devices

Connection type: network cable only

Configure your web browser(s) for automatic proxy detection.

Smartphones, tablets and other devices 

Connection type: wireless only

Set up your wireless connection.

Laptops and other devices

Connection type: wireless

  1. Set up your wireless connection.
  2. Configure your web browser(s) for automatic proxy detection.

Laptops and other devices

Connection type: network cable

  1. Set up your network access control configuration.
  2. Configure your web browser(s) for automatic proxy detection.

 

Configure your browser(s) for automatic proxy detection

NOTE:
This step applies only to laptop or PC browsers. If you’re using a mobile device (e.g. smart phone or tablet), do not carry out these steps.

Please carry out these steps for each of the browsers you use on your computer.

Browser Instructions
Internet Explorer
  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click Tools > Internet Options.
  3. In the Internet Options dialog box, select the Connections tab.
    • Click LAN Settings.
  4. In the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings dialog box:
    • Ensure that all check boxes are cleared.
    • Click OK.
Firefox
  1. Open Firefox.
  2. Click Tools > Options.
  3. In the Options dialog box, click Advanced.
    • Select the Network tab.
      Under the Connection field, click Settings...
  4. In the Connection Settings dialog box:
    • Select No proxy.
    • Click OK.
Chrome
  1. Open Chrome and enter the following web address:
    chrome://chrome/settings/
  2. Select Show advanced settings.
  3. In the Settings page, under Network, click Change proxy settings...
  4. In the Internet Properties dialog box, select the Connections tab.
    • Click LAN Settings.
  5. In the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings dialog box:
    • Ensure that all check boxes are cleared.
    • Click OK.
Safari
  1. Open Safari.
  2. Click Safari > Preferences....
  3. In the Preferences dialog box, select the Advanced tab.
    • In the Proxies field, click Change Settings...
  4. In the Network dialog box, select the Proxies tab.
    • Ensure that all check boxes are cleared.
    • Click OK.
  5. In the Network dialog box:
    • Click Apply.
    • Close the Network dialog box.
Opera
  1. Open Opera.
  2. Click the Opera Menu and select Settings.
  3. In the Settings page, under Network, click Change proxy settings...
  4. In the Internet Properties dialog box, select the Connections tab.
    • Click LAN Settings.
  5. In the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings dialog box:
    • Ensure that all check boxes are cleared.
    • Click OK.
