Every year, UCT welcomes a variety of visitors to its campuses. Some visitors stay for a few days or weeks, while others stay longer. During this time, visitors may require access to one or more of UCT's facilities - including internet or network access.

Read on to find out how to get this access.

I am a visitor

Do you use eduroam at your home institution? If you're not sure, check the list of eduroam-affiliated institutions.

1. I am already an eduroam user

Once you're at UCT, turn on your WiFi connection and connect to the eduroam signal. Simply log on with your own username and password (from your home institution). Nothing else is required on the UCT network.

2. I am not an eduroam user

Your method of getting access depends on how long you will stay on campus, and whether you need to use additional facilities.

I am at UCT for a short period. I only need internet access.

I need to use the internet and other UCT facilities (e.g. the library, UCT network drives, UCT parking).
or

I will be at at UCT for a month or more.
  1. Ask your UCT host to sponsor a guest account for you to access the UCT Guest WiFi service.
  2. Once you arrive on campus, follow the setup instructions that were sent to you via SMS or email. If you didn't receive this information yet, ask your UCT host for the details.
  1. Ask your UCT host to apply for a Third party account. Note that if you are approved as a Third Party, your access to facilities will depend on what kind of visitor you are - as defined in the UCT role model for third parties.
  2. Once you arrive on campus, follow these procedures to get access to the internet and other relevant facilities.

I am a staff member hosting a visitor

  • Does your visitor come from an eduroam-affiliated institution?
    All they need to do is log on with their own username and password (from their home institution). Nothing else is required on the UCT network. 
     
  • Does your visitor require more than just Internet access, such as access to the library, the UCT network drives, or will they be here for more than a month or two?
    If so, you need to apply for a Third party account. Once your guest arrives on campus, ask them to follow these procedures to get access to the internet and other relevant facilities.
     
  • However, if your visitor does not come from an eduroam-affiliated institution, doesn't need anything beyond Internet access and will be here for a relatively short time, then you can sponsor them on the UCT Guest WiFi service. As part of this process, the system will email or SMS them instructions on how to connect once they arrive on campus. Alternatively, you can keep the login details and give it to them once they arrive.
