Why are the old Polycom VVX310 handsets being disconnected?

The Polycom VVX310 handsets are no longer supported by the manufacturer, which means they no longer receive critical security patches. These patches are essential for protecting the UCT network from security vulnerabilities that could be exploited by hackers. UCT has since disconnected the VVX310 handsets to ensure more secure communication.

I had a Polycom VVX310 handset, what will it be replaced with?

The replacement for your Polycom VVX310 handset depends on your role at UCT.

If you were previously using a Polycom VVX310 as a standard user, e.g. office staff or staff who work on UCT Contact Centres (i.e., switchboard, helpdesk and reception areas, you will be provided with a headset, which integrates with Microsoft Teams. You can manage calls, and meetings, as well as access your calendar.

If you primarily used the Polycom VVX310 in a common area or classroom setting, the replacement will be the new Polycom CCX400 handset. This handset offers basic voice communication functionality designed for shared-use environments.

Can I keep my existing handset extension number with a new headset?

Yes! Your extension number is not affected. So, you can continue to be reached at the same number you have been using.

How can I request a new headset?

If you are a new employee or an existing staff member,  you can use the automated extension number request process. The system will automatically determine whether a headset or handset is suitable based on your profile.

We no longer exchange Polycom VVX310 handsets for headset users who have not yet received a headset. To request a new headset, please log a call to request a voice instrument. The request requires approval from your department head.

Please log a call to return the unused Polycom device for collection and disposal of your VVX310 handset

What types of headsets are currently available through ICTS Acquisition services?

ICTS Acquisitions offers a variety of Microsoft Teams-certified headsets to cater for different needs.

The available headsets span from basic USB-wired models to feature-rich wireless options. This ensures you can find a headset that meets your specific requirements and preferences while guaranteeing seamless integration with Microsoft Teams for optimal audio quality.

Submit a request via ServiceNow and indicate your headset preference in the Special installation instructions, colour preferences, or additional notes field on the online form.

ICTS may not be able to fulfil all individual headset model requests promptly, as some models may not be readily available. However, alternative options can be ordered and made available upon request.

I prefer a handset over a headset. Can I still get one?

Due to budgetary limitations and the university's strategic shift towards Microsoft Teams for communication, UCT can no longer provide traditional handsets at no cost. However, if you choose to retain your telephonic handset, there will be an ongoing cost incurred by your department and the request will require approval from your Head of Department (HOD) before ICTS can provide assistance.
