Active UCT staff and students
If you graduated from UCT, and are still associated to the university either as a staff member or active student, you can use your active UCT credentials to join the meeting on the day.
- You need to have internet connectivity on the device that you're using to participate in the meeting. Please join at least 30 minutes prior to the event to allow the organising committee sufficient time to verify your registration and give you access to the official event.
- Importantly, please ensure that you log on using your UCT account. You will not be able to access the meeting if you log on using a non-UCT email address.
Join on the day
- You can either access the meeting via the Microsoft Teams desktop client or go to teams.microsoft.com.
Note: we recommend using the desktop client as it offers a better user experience and more features to participate in the meeting. - If prompted, log on with your registered UCT credentials and then verify your device:
- Username: staff/studentnumber@wf.uct.ac.za
- Password: your UCT password
- Click Calendar in the left-hand column of the Teams screen.
- Open the UCT Convocation AGM 2024 meeting and click Join.
- You will be placed in the lobby for verification purposes. This may take a few minutes.
During the meeting you will be able to participate via the available chat functionality and voting forms.
Alumni who graduated from UCT from 2014 onwards
Part 1: days prior to the event
You will need to join the meeting using your UCT email address and password. If you cannot remember your UCT password, please reset it at Password Self-Service (https://password.uct.ac.za).
Additionally, multi-factor authentication is enabled for all UCT accounts, to enhance the university’s digital security. This has been mandated by UCT’s Risk Management Executive Committee (RMEC) and includes your account. If you haven’t already done so, please set up MFA for your account.
Thereafter, make sure that you can access your Microsoft Teams account at teams.microsoft.com.
Should you experience any issues or require assistance, please send an email to convocation@uct.ac.za and a consultant will be in contact with you to provide the necessary assistance.
Part 2: on the day

Alumni who graduated from UCT prior to 2014
Part 1: days prior to the event
We have created a unique username and password for you to participate in the meeting. This information has already been sent to you. The password is temporary, so we recommend that you complete this process in advance to join the meeting without any glitches on the day.
There are numerous steps that you need to complete to access your Microsoft Teams temporary account. This is due to multi-factor authentication that has been enabled for all UCT accounts, to enhance the university’s digital security. This has been mandated by UCT’s Risk Management Executive Committee (RMEC) and includes your temporary account too.
- Navigate to teams.microsoft.com where you will be required to enter the username that was sent to you. Click Next.
- You are then prompted to enter your temporary password. Click Sign In.
- You will then be required to verify your identity. Click Next.
- On the Keep your account secure page, click I want to set up a different method.
- Select Phone from the drop-down menu.
- Click Confirm.
- Select your applicable country from the drop-down menu (e.g., South Africa) and enter your mobile phone number.
- Ensure the Receive a code option is selected and click Next.
- Enter the code that is sent via SMS to your device and click Next.
- A notification confirms that verification is complete and your phoned has been registered.
- Click Next > Done.
- Next you are prompted to update your password.
- Current password: enter the password that was provided to you.
- New password: enter at least a 16-character password.
Note: Your password cannot contain your username. It must contain at least three of the following: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. - Confirm password: re-enter your new password.
- Click Sign in.
- The Microsoft Teams web portal opens.
- If you’re prompted to switch to the new Teams, click Switch now.
- You're now ready to participate in the AGM.

Part 2: on the day

- Go to teams.microsoft.com where you will be required to enter your UCT login credentials. Click Next.
- Enter your UCT password and click Sign In.
- Verify your identity, by clicking the listed mobile number device.
- Enter the code sent via SMS to your device and click Verify.
- If prompted, click Use the web app instead.
- Click Calendar in the left-hand column of the Teams screen.
- Open the UCT Convocation AGM 2024 meeting and click Join.
- You will be placed in the lobby for verification purposes. This may take a few minutes.
During the meeting you will be able to participate via the available chat functionality and voting forms.
