Google Drive is the online storage platform available on Google’s G suite online productivity platform. It allows you to work on files across various devices, regardless of your location.

What’s changing?

The Google Drive desktop app for Mac or PC is being updated to a new feature called Drive File Stream. This feature, which is only applicable to your UCT Google account, will be updated on 12 May 2018, but you may already be getting a pop-up from Google informing you of a change.

You can choose to either upgrade now, or wait until closer to the May deadline. When you’re ready, you’ll need to download the new application on your desktop, but it doesn’t use much disk space as the actual files are saved online.

For your personal Google accounts, you will need to use Backup and Sync.

What do I need to do?

If you use the current Google Drive desktop app for Mac or PC (with your UCT Google account):

  1. Navigate to Google and log on with your UCT credentials.
  2. Follow these step-by-step instructions to download and install Drive File Stream on your machine.

Once installed, you will be able to access your files in the My Drive and Team Drives folders on your machine. Your data that was previously saved in the old desktop client will appear in the My Drive folder.
