25 Feb 2025
25 Feb 2025

In line with efforts to optimise printing services, we will remove from the servers all iPrint printers that have not been used in the past six months.

If your current printer falls into this category, and you don't want it removed, please take action by Monday, 3 March 2025.

Step 1: Check your printer name

To check whether your current printer will be impacted, first check if it is an iPrint printer. Use one of the methods below to check:

Option 1

  1. From the Windows start menu, search for "Printers". Select the Printers & Scanners option. (This might also be called Devices and Printers, depending on your Windows version.)
  2. Search for your current printer.
  3. If the name starts with an IPP number - e.g. IPP00001 - it is an iPrint printer.

Option 2

  1. Open a document, e.g., in Microsoft Word
  2. Press Ctrl + P or go to File > Print
  3. In the Printer section, look at the name of the selected printer.
  4. If the name starts with an IPP number - e.g. IPP00001 - it is an iPrint printer.
Step 2: Check if your printer will be removed

If your printer name starts with "IPP", open the list of iPrint printers marked for removal, and search for your printer's name.

Step 3: Take appropriate action

If your printer is not included in this list, you don't need to take action.

However, if your printer is included in the list, follow the instruction relevant to you:

  1. I don't use / need the printer anymore: You don't need to take action.
  2. I still need this printerPlease log an online call or send an email to icts-helpdesk@uct.ac.za to request that it not be removed. When logging a call, please
  • provide the printer name (IPP number noted earlier) and indicate that you would like to keep the printer, and
  • provide the printer location (building, floor, and room number).

Note that you will need to make this request by Monday, 3 March 2025 at the latest.

MPS offers value-added printing, copying and scanning services

While iPrint services are still available on campus, ICTS is moving towards streamlining printing services at UCT. As part of this initiative, we recommend the adoption of Managed Print Services (MPS) which offers several advantages, including:

  • standardised equipment and processes,
  • a cost-effective pay-per-use pricing model,
  • comprehensive maintenance, and
  • readily available on-campus support provided by Altron.

View the MPS website to find out more about the printing solutions on offer to your department.
