Microsoft is introducing additional measures to enhance their security and prevent potential breaches. This global change will impact all Windows users who have not installed security patches and updates on their devices since July 2021.

Those affected will not be able to sign in to Microsoft services from 30th June 2024, until you have the required security patches and Windows updates installed.

Machines that are still using Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems, which are no longer supported and don’t receive security updates and patches, will also be affected by this security update. This means that any computers running these outdated Windows operating systems continue to pose a significant risk to the UCT network and its digital assets.

Check that your device is updated to avoid losing access

Please ensure that you have the required patches and updates installed by following these steps.

If your device is running an older version of Windows 10 (e.g., version 1607 or earlier), please update to Windows 10 version 22H2 by 29 June 2024 to ensure that you don't lose access to Microsoft 365 services.

If you’re still using Windows 7 or Windows 8 please contact the IT Helpdesk for assistance with upgrading your device.

Why is patching and updating necessary?

You must install updates as soon as they become available to ensure the security of your data and protect the UCT network from attacks. UCT provides an automatic update service for Windows, Apple, and Linux machines. Once you subscribe to the applicable service, you will automatically receive critical security patches and software updates.
